I've always thought that once I was an adult, I'd no longer have to deal with breakouts. Boy, was I wrong! Every month without fail, a little army of pimples pop-up and leave me clamoring for a solution. With my fairly sensitive skin, some remedies do more harm than good. Then I saw the light at the end of the tunnel!

Neutrogena recently sent over a complimentary Light Therapy Acne Mask LED Treatment (for Home Use) for me to test out. This is probably the coolest beauty gadget I'll ever own, and I can't wait to tell you more about it!

Neutrogena Light Therapy Acne Mask LED Treatment for Home Use includes one mask and one 30 session activator - $45.99-49.99 CAD - Available at Wal-Mart & Shoppers Drug Mart locations across Canada

What Does it Do?

This mask uses the power of LED lights in blue (to eliminate P.acnes bacteria) and red (to calm inflammation) to disrupt the acne cycle and leave you with clear and healthy skin. Not only will it treat the imperfections that have already arisen, it well help prevent future breakouts from occurring with regular use.

I learned just by reading the included glossary that there is an entire spectrum when it comes to acne; blackheads, whiteheads, pustules and pimples (the last two are basically bumps above the skin, that are not inflamed.  A pustule has a white/yellow head, whereas a pimple does not). The mask will treat all of these conditions if they fall under the scale of mild to moderate.

If you have 'nodule' acne (those pimples that you can feel under the skin) often associated with severe/cystic acne, this treatment won't be a good fit for you.

What I love about this innovative mask is how gentle it is. If you have sensitive skin like I do, this is a very gentle way to combat your acne symptoms.

How Do You Use It?

It is incredibly easy to use! You just slip on the mask (there is a pair of glasses arms to keep it in place on your head), plug in the cord to the Activator, and hold down the button. Your face will be illuminated for 10 minutes, and it automatically shuts off! Easy as pie!

The Activator is good for 30 sessions, and afterwards is totally recyclable through a program called Stericycle. You can even purchase new Activators separately without having to repurchase a new mask every time (these retail between $19.99-21.99 CAD).

My Thoughts

Fortunately for me, I fall into the category of mild acne. I'm thankful that I typically only get breakouts around that time of the month, and they're usually restricted to my chin. Good ol' hormonal acne!  I was excited to zap some of my skincare woes away, especially with the arrival of some new pustules (doesn't that sound appealing?).

Before treatment

I've started to include this in my nighttime routine, right after I cleanse my face. I just kick back and relax for 10 minutes while I get my glow on! It's a great way to just unplug and unwind. I may also be guilty of blasting Daft Punk while wearing it - it really adds to the whole experience.

I was a little concerned about how bright this was, given that my eyes tend to be very light-sensitive. The built in glasses that help keep this on actually are amber-tinted, so they'll keep your peepers protected! I do notice that after the treatment ends and I take the mask off, I see things with a green-ish hue. I was slightly alarmed the first time, but it goes away after about 30 seconds and my normal vision returns.

While the charge holds 30 uses, I've used 10 so far and already see some changes! I had a few other whiteheads pop-up after the before shot was taken, but they shrunk about as quickly as they appeared! Within 2 days they were practically gone.

I've also noticed a great improvement to the overall tone of my skin. Much less red and blotchy!

After Treatment

I'm going to continue to use this mask for the remaining 20 sessions, and I'm hopeful I'll have a much clearer visage by the end! I'll be sure to update you all through social media, so make sure you're following me - @dollanddye on Instagram, Twitter & Facebook.

Thank you again to Neutrogena for sending this my way! I had so much fun testing this out and look forward to banning breakouts from now on!
