Five Unique Ottawa Gift Shops

Shopping for presents is one of my favourite pastimes. I've got this knack for remembering every time a loved one drops a casual "I love that!" and squirreling it away for later. Coming up with the perfect present may be easy for me, but finding it can be a journey in itself!

The thrill of the chase, the art of surprise, and the sheer satisfaction of making someone's day with a thoughtful gift is SO satisfying to me. Though I know many others feel a ‘needle in a haystack’ type of stress at the mere thought of this treasure hunt.

Lucky for you, I also have a knack for knowing where to find really some cool stuff in Ottawa! Here’s my five fave gift shops in the city, that all cater to unique tastes and personalities!

Highly Fresh

303 Richmond Rd

Consider this a one-stop-shop for the effortlessly cool folks. If you want a truly unique gift for a loved one with a niche or quirky taste level, Highly Fresh will have what you need. This expertly curated boutique (and web shop) has everything from zines, pins, to drool-worthy snacks and press-on nails from all around the globe.

Just try and resist getting a few things for yourself - I dare you.

My Picks: White Rabbit Candy Jar Candle, The Connect Deck: Pride Edition, Fishbowl Earrings.

Axia Station

147 Rideau St

Downtown Ottawa has a cool new shop that is overflowing with the coolest imported gifts. Walking into Axia Station is like entering a neon dream that’s loaded with the best K-beauty products, exotic snacks and drinks, and adorable knick-knacks. They even have a claw machine arcade at the back of the store!

I especially recommend this store if you're gift shopping for someone who likes to taste-test treats you can’t find in Canada, or has a soft spot for all things Sanrio.

My Picks: Blind boxes, KitKats, sheet masks.

Kindred Shop & Studio

1243 Wellington St W

Shopping locally is truly magical, and this boutique is a perfect example of why. Kindred is home to a variety of mystical fine jewelry, apothecary goods, and badass apparel. If you’re shopping for someone who’s a little witchy, unapologetically queer, or proudly feminist, this shop is a must-visit!

Owner Tamara Steinborn is not only one of the coolest people you’ll meet, she also has a big heart for her community. She is very passionate about giving back to Ottawa-based organizations, particularly Cat Rescue Network and Period Packs.

My Picks: Früg Jewellery (designed & handmade by Tamara), Spirit Board Ceramic Incense Burner, My Body, My Choice T-Shirt.

The Papery

858 Bank St

While their original location was damaged due to a fire, The Papery has returned to the Glebe neighborhood to offer exquisite stationery, captivating puzzles, and everything you’ll need to wrap up the perfect present.

They carry every weight and colour of paper you can dream of, and the finest pens to accompany them. If there’s an avid writer or stationary-lover (i.e., a Virgo) on your shopping list, go give this charming boutique a look-see!

My Picks: Leuchtturm journals, Alice Hinther 'The Lost Glebe' Jigsaw Puzzle, Smiley Face Boxed Note Cards.

Maker House Co.

987 Wellington St W

This is no ordinary shop - it's a celebration of community, craftsmanship, and Canadiana.

Maker House Co. is a much-beloved boutique for its handcrafted goods and commitment to supporting Canadian artisans. Their shelves are home to over 150 makers from across the country, so you’ll be sure to find the perfect handmade gift for just about anyone on your list!

Still not sure what to buy? Their annual Holiday Wish Book is a must-see for gift-spiration!

My Picks: Maker House Gift Boxes, Hand Stitched House Hippo DIY Kit, Ottawa Neighborhood Aromatic Cedar Coasters.
